Exquisite early 1960s Jean Varon (John Bates) designer evening dress in navy blue shantung and lace.
Bates is sometimes cited as the inventor of the mini skirt, but this timeless gown is altogether more demure!
The bodice is in delicate floral lace, with scalloped edges to the v-neckline and sheer bracelet length sleeves with flared cuffs.
Bust darts add shape, and the dress has a fitted waist with loops each side (perhaps for a sash or belt).
The skirt is in navy blue shantung slubbed fabric and is gently gathered each side of the waist, with a subtle flare to the hem.
Fully lined (except the sleeves) in navy blue acetate. Labelled Jean Varon.
In superb vintage condition. There is a very slight age-related lightening of the lining around the shoulders to a more purplish hue, but this is natural and does not detract.
